If you have spent any amount of time rubber stamping, you know that the process can entail a certain amount of mess at times. The accumulation of ink and ink pads in various colors and shades can also make for quite the cluttered table. One way to cut down on both mess and clutter is by utilizing a self-inking rubber stamp. Self-inking rubber stamps are unique in that they do not require a separate pad upon which to set your stamp to soak in the ink before pacing the rubber on the paper. Instead, self inking rubber stamps eliminate the need for ink pads by a containment system within the stamp itself. There are two types of self-inking rubber stamps. The first is a stamp in which the ink is already absorbed into the stamp. This style of self-inking rubber stamp tends to last for a very long time, as long as it is stored properly in its case when it is not being used. This style of self-inking rubber stamp is generally non-refillable. The second style of self-inking rubber stamp contains a pad which is rolled back as the stamp is pressed down. The stamp itself is coated in ink before the pad rolls out of the way, and the ink pad rolls back into place when pressure is taken off of the handle of the stamp. Self-inking rubber stamps cut down on mess simply by taking the ink pad out of the equation. There is no way to accidentally brush your fingers or hands through the supply of ink in a self-inking rubber stamp, and they are easy and more convenient to store than a batch of inking equipment. Self-inking rubber stamps do have a couple of disadvantages, however. Both kinds are more expensive than a stamp and ink pad set would be. As mentioned, the self-inking rubber stamp that includes the ink supply inside the stamp itself must be replaced when it is used up, as it cannot be refilled. The rollback style of self-inking rubber stamp can be refilled, but is even more costly than the contained style. Self-inking rubber stamps also have the disadvantage of only being available with one color of ink. If you are using the self-inking rubber stamp for business purposes, this is fine. If you are using the self-inking rubber stamp for your hobby, however, you will need to purchase self-inking stamps in the variety of shades you will require for your projects. This can lead to a considerable price jump in your pursuit. |
